  • Transportation included from Taupo to the start of the track and return from the end of the track included.
  • Also provided are a trekking pole and a thorough briefing on what to expect on your big day out. We can also provide you with pants, jackets, boots, sunscreen and water if required.
  • Accommodation in Taupo can also be provided.

Mangatepopo to Ketetahi (19.5km 7-8 Hours).

It's an early shuttle bus ride from your accommodation in Taupo out to the start of the trail. To begin with you cross a succession of old lava flows from Ngauruhoe, then a steep climb is required to reach the Mangatepopo Saddle, which rewards climbers with fantastic views of the valley. From here you cross to the Red Crater with spectacular formations and colours on display. Carry on to Blue Lake where cold fresh water fills an old vent, and then to the spectacular Emerald Lakes, which fill old explosion pits. Their brilliant colouring is caused by minerals washed down from the thermal area of Red Crater. The track then sidles around the northern slope of Tongariro and descends in a zigzag track past Ketetahi Shelter and down to the road end at 760 m, where your shuttle back to Taupo awaits.
Be prepared for a long, challenging but supremely rewarding day out!
